Everybody likes pie. What’s your favorite kind? My favorite kind of pie is a pie chart! At a recent Regional Transit Dialogue meeting, subcommittee members reviewed pie charts to better understand how other cities fund their transit systems. We learned that sales taxes are the most popular way to dedicate local funding to run transit systems. Transit systems receive funding from many sources: the fare that you pay to ride, money from federal and state governments, and also money contributed locally. If the local funding comes from a “dedicated” source, this can help ensure that the transit system has a stable income to pay for its day-to-day operations. While sales taxes are the most popular dedicated source nationwide, there are other options such as property taxes or gasoline taxes. We’ll be learning more about these funding options at future meetings.
