BIKE MONTH MISSION

According to the League of American Bicyclists, National Bike Month was first established in May of 1956. May provides a chance to show the legitimacy and many benefits of bicycling for fun, fitness, and transportation. Some people will ride for their wallet, others will ride for their health or the environment. Many of the events in Central Oklahoma during Bike Month provide an opportunity to celebrate the power of bicycling and being active.

Bike to Work Week

Bike to Work Week will be observed May 15-21, 2023, with Bike to Work Day taking place Friday, May 19. The cities of Edmond, Guthrie, Midwest City, Moore, Norman, Oklahoma City, Piedmont, and Yukon hosted organized rides.

Bike to Work Day is an annual event designed to encourage people to use their bikes as a means of transportation. According to the League of American Bicyclists, 40% of all trips in the U.S. are less than two miles, making bicycling a feasible and fun way to get to work.

Health and Recreation

Cycling is a low-impact, aerobic workout that can provide many health benefits. These may include exposure to sunlight, improved cardiovascular fitness, increased joint movement, reduced stress and back pain, stronger immune system, weight loss and overall fitness.

Environment

Bicycle commuting contributes to a clean environment in several ways. For starters, bicycling reduces transportation emissions and traffic congestion as well as the need for petroleum.
